Merging randomly. Every merge should be intentional. Ask yourself: does this merge help me build a better sequence, or does it create a mess? Merging two 64s into a 128 is great if the 128 fits neatly into your sequence. It's bad if it ends up in a corner where it blocks your 512.
Panicking at a full board. A nearly-full board is stressful, but don't start making random swipes. Look carefully — there's usually a sequence of moves that clears space. Stay calm, think one move at a time.
Ignoring small tiles. Small tiles (2s and 4s) need to be managed just as carefully as large ones. A stray 2 sitting in your high-value corner area will eventually block your merges if you don't address it.
When to Break the Rules
Experienced players know there are times to deviate from the corner strategy. If a merge is available that significantly increases your largest tile and you have room to recover your position, take it. The corner strategy is a guideline, not a rigid rule. Good players adapt to the board state while keeping the core principle — protect the high-value corner — as their anchor.
